What people do to avoid having to decide
Why waiting looks so sensible.
By Katharina Beer, decision architect ·
One more training course. Only once the project is finished. Only once the children are older. Only once the right moment has come.
The basic problemThese are avoidance strategies, and they are rarely chosen consciously.
They feel sensible, they look like diligence, sometimes even like hard work. What they have in common is that they ensure a decision does not have to be made.
How avoidance can be recognised
The waiting always has a good reason. The reason changes, the decision stays open. After the training course comes the next condition, and after that another.
My stance on avoidance
The key statementAvoidance is human, and a decision stays open as long as no one questions the waiting.
Avoidance almost always has an understandable reason, and I do not judge it.
Many people experience it as a relief when they recognise what hides behind the next good reason to wait.
